Why Good Dogs Bite Too!
_
Australian shepherd nips girl at soccer game-owner is sued and loses homeowners insurance
Yellow Lab bites the pizza guy-owner is sued, loses homeowner insurance and euthanizes dog when can’t get another insurer to cover them
Boxer bites child in face-dog is euthanized
Two Rotties break out of their fenced yard to chase children in their schoolyard biting a school aide-both dogs (one only a puppy) are euthanized.
Each of these dogs were “good family dogs” that weren’t expected to bite anyone but did. Are they bad dogs? Is it a case of bad owners? Are we missing something?
Former animal officer Melissa Berryman, author of “People Training for Good Dogs What Breeders Don’t Tell You and Trainers Don’t Teach” has investigated hundreds of dog bite injuries and knows that we are indeed “missing something.” Through past case history, current incidents and listener call-ins, she will dissect dog bite injuries, attacks and deaths that occur throughout the US. A bite is never OK but not understanding why dogs bite, is not. Setting our dogs up to bite through our ignorance, is not.
Society is culturally reinforced to believe that only bad dogs owned by bad people bite. That’s how far we go and it isn’t true! We generalize and stereotype-blaming the dog-period! Dogs are expected to love all people and animals and to tolerate any human mistake, error or miscommunication or else!
Dog bite injuries list breed and location and little else. The heart of the story is in the DETAILS that are never asked. In the above real injury cases you were told nothing about the incidents and the dog’s death sentences were also delivered without facts or understanding.
By not analyzing the context of bites, the actions of the owner and the injured party we set dogs up to bite, set people up to be injured by the same events again and sentence too many “good” dogs to death.
Current dog bite injury prevention information is outdated, incomplete and largely unusable. No one is making headway in prevention as the same preventable bite injuries continue to occur! Society remains unable to read situations, diffuse and then prevent events that they could easily avoid if we would change our thinking and actions. Dog bite injuries are a preventable safety issue that is not being prevented due to a socially entrenched belief that only bad dogs bite.
Good dogs bite too! And when they do, unnecessary pain and suffering, lawsuits, vicious dog hearings and euthanasia follows.
Melissa will look at all sides, examine State laws and regulations, discuss incidents with dog owners and victims too and then teach preventative action. She will also tackle societal misconceptions that hinder progress. Thus this is also a cross-over program that non-dog owning parents should listen in to as well.
Case in point:
Man goes to home and is bitten by dog.
Common thought was the dog bite because he was protecting his property from a stranger.
Animal Officer Melissa goes to the same home 15 minutes later and is not bitten by the dog.
So the dog bite was not because of territoriality. Do you know why I wasn’t bitten? If you don’t, you are not alone.
